Causes of Balance Impairment

Causes of Balance and Mobility Impairment in Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is a progressive autoimmune disease typically diagnosed in young adults, affecting the central nervous system causing damage to the myelin surrounding the nerves and lesions in the brain.  Although the disease progresses differently in each person often gait and mobility problems are encountered. Individuals experience many different symptoms such as loss of sensation, visual or vestibular function, ; spasticity; weakness, central processing and motor output dysfunction. Any or all of the symptoms may contribute to a loss of balance leading to difficulty in walking.

If you experience balance problems you should see a physical therapist who is knowledgeable in treating patients with multiple sclerosis. Many people in my MS exercise class partially funded by the MSFoundation find they are able to do so much more than they thought they were capable of. When people get the diagnosis that they have a neurodegenerative disease and experience a relapse many do not rehabilitate back to where they started. With proper guidance many of them are experiencing recovery of function that they thought was unattainable.

I just want to say I am just all new to blogging and truly loved this website. Most likely I’m going to bookmark your blog post . You certainly come with superb articles. With thanks for sharing with us your web site.

Additionally, they will state that it is going to work for any individual at any type of level.

Will BalanceWear help everyone?
No it doesn’t help everyone. However it does help about 80% of the people I have seen. Some people get 5-10%, 25% improvement day one and others get the whole enchilada! The therapist’s knowledge and expertise is a factor too.

I had two therapists fitting me with Bal. Wear vest and they both felt very different! While one weight in first brought immediate change (reduced to zero that “inner shaking” = constant body attempts to balance itself) the second basically didn’t bring much change (a little less unsteadiness…). So I think that % of improvement you mention depends most of all on therapist!

I have heard of the inner shaking and seen it. Incredibly unsettling I would guess. The percent of improvement can be affected by the therapist. Some are better than others. Because you know what you felt the first time strive to get that ssame placement of weight. Please contact me Cindy@motiontherapeutics.com

I also think improvement is affected by the way a person’s body perceives the sensory input from the weights and the motor output that the body has to make. While BalanceWear seem very easy the bodies response is incredibly neurologically complex.

Very interesting points you have observed, thanks for posting.

I am 89 years old and live in a retirement community just outside Portland, OR. I don’t know that the cause of my balance problems has ever been completely diagnosed though I have been told that I have small vessel ischemia. I also have osteoporosis and probably some osteoarthritis. My balance has slowly been getting worse for a dozen years. Nevertheless, I manage to maintain quite an active life style – walking fast with a walker and riding a tricycle (hard work). In general, my overall health is good. Where, not too far away, can I find out about these balance vests?

Hi Alice,
Thank you for you inquiry. We do not have anyone in Oregon yet. Please tell a therapist:) I will be teaching in Seattle October 17 and 18. Otherwise people do come to see me in the San Francisco Bay area.

What about balance correction with people who have Meniere’s? Have you had an opportunity to see if it helps with the balance issue.

I haven’t personally treated a patient with Meniere’s disease but saw the results of a colleague and it was very positive.
